The album did not sell well in the band’s home country of England, as neither of their charting singles, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” and “Homborg” were included on the original English version. I really, really want this to be better than you guys seem to put it as. A supreme album from '67, Procol Harum's debut easily sits with Cream's 'Disraeli Gears' and Hendrix's 'Axis Bold as Love' or the Beatles' albums of the day in terms of originality and quality. However, critically Procol Harum was very well recieved, especially among many of their contemporary musicians. Like both Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Soft Machine and The Byrds among others, Procol Harum certainly paved the way to the progressive rock to come. On the other hand, I sometimes hear some Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Elbow or Traffic in there. Just heard A Whiter Shade of Pale and realize I need to get this now. Do write more on them, if you have time. Album Rating: 4.0Yeah, I know that album. From your rating and review, I see I didn't really miss anything. It's incredible. Esoteric Recordings. While ''The Worm and the Tree'' is not their best epic song, it's well done instrumentally. My favorite song is easily ''The Only One''. Songs contain good ideas, but could be more developed or more enticing for most of them. A classic, cheers man! Will listen to it but I'm not hurry. Melodies are kinda bland. The album artwork is like a more positive interpretation of the debut. Album Rating: 2.5I agree with that, Jethro. The other favorites are hard to determine. Poor Trower. Shine On Brightly (Procol Harum) A&M SP 4151: Jim Miller in Rolling Stone, 7 December 1968. There is only one overtly "classical" moment here, and it’s a send up -- there's a direct quote from Pachelbel's Canon as a brief intro to the wonderful "Sunday Morning.” Some truly perverse lyric moments are expertly crafted into well-composed songs (would we expect anything less? I just wish it was more like classic Procol Harum. It's surely one of their most progressive one. Album Rating: 3.0That's pretty radio-friendly stuff. The departure of guitarist Robin Trower has meant that there are fewer bluesy licks in the music but new guitarist Mick Grabham is a good replacement who´s playing style to my ears actually suits Procol Harum´s music better. Procol Harum is the debut studio album by English rock band Procol Harum. It was released in September 1967 by record label Deram in the US, following their breakthrough and immensely popular single "A Whiter Shade of Pale".The track doesn't appear on the UK version of the album… I didn't even make it all the way through. Album Rating: 2.5I think we're pretty close on this one, Jethro. The only problem with the album is that it got overlooked by about 95% of those people who turned the band's debut single, 'A Whiter Shade of Pale', into the all-time best seller it became. I'm quite surprised that on this site, the debut Procol Harum currently has a slightly higher rating than Shine On Brightly as I think this album is surely their masterpeice. This, Shine on Brightly and Grand Hotel are all brilliant albums. Album Rating: 3.0K.
